Recently I replaced the hard drives in 2 different machines;
A: A top notch 18" HP HDX monster portable.
B: An older netbook ASUS Eee 1000HE

For my HDX18 the most noticeable improvement was the reduction in access time. In other words: all software responds almost instant when asked to perform a task. This reduces the time being spent on waiting for a response quite significantly. It makes me working more efficient.
The second most important advantage for this machine to be equipped with SSD, is the reduction of generated heat. The fan on the HP HDX18 pulls the air in from the front, where it first cools off the hard drives. Then the air passes over the copper cooling pipes which lies over the CPU and other heat generating controllers. Since the SSD isn't heating up the air before it hits the CPU, the overall cooling becomes more efficient, thus reducing the need for high counts of RPM for the cooling fan, which is annoyingly loud. (it is the only bad thing about the HP HDX18)

The tiny netbook had WinXP and was not running fast enough to be of any real effective use (I had trimmed the XP down to the bare essentials). With a new SSD and newly installed Win7 starter edition, this battery-efficient and lightweight tool just got an extended life in my business. There are some limitations to the Win7 starter edition, but none yet discovered so serious that stops me from going with it. It feels twice as fast, compared to the original installation. So far, this is the best upgrade.
